Lessons Learned in the Garden It was a simple plan really. We would just dig up a little area in the yard and help the kids plant a little garden. We would share our produce with others and along the way we would learn things about how good God is, how he provides for us and how this could help us take better care of the earth. However, as is typical, God had many truths he wanted to teach me along the way. Maybe he wants to teach you some of these things as well… - You need the right tools and it is OK to ask for help. If we had done this on our own and with the tools we started with, we would still be planting. Those of you who are trying to grow spiritual things all by yourself are missing out. God has planned that we help each other. Find a class or small group and get plugged in.
- Kids are not very good at distinguishing between weeds and good plants. If left alone, they will pull up both. You have the unique perspective as parents and adults to help them weed out those things in their lives that will choke out spiritual growth. Do not expect them to make that decision.
- Weeding is no fun. Enough said.
- It is amazing how fast weeds can take over a very healthy garden. After only being gone for a week at camp, things were way out of control and never fully recovered. Be diligent!
- You can’t depend on others (no matter how wonderful they are) to tend your garden. Yes, I admit that I thought someone would take pity and do a little weeding for me. This was an unrealistic expectation because it was my responsibility. Scriptures are very clear that you are to teach spiritual truths to your children. No Sunday school class or school can take your place.
- God is in charge of the yield. Be faithful and let him be in charge of the results.
- One little seedling can produce a whole lot of fruit. Our God is able to do exceedingly more than we can ever think or ask. Never miss an opportunity to plant a seed. You will be surprised at what God can do with it.
